Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the mental mechanisms of the elderly living alone, in the way in which social isolation and depression may lead to suicidal ideation, and how social support affects this mental process both directly and/or indirectly. The survey data were collected from 399 older people above the age of 65 who are living alone and residing in Yeongdeungpo-Gu, Seoul. The results of the study are as follows. First, among the elderly living alone, depression plays an important role in moderating suicidal thought, while social support and social isolation are not significantly related to suicidal ideation. Second, both social support and social isolation are related to depression significantly. That is, higher level of social support and lower level of social isolation decrease the level of depression. Third, depression mediate the relationship between social support and suicidal ideation as well as social isolation and suicidal ideation. In other words, social support and social isolation have a indirect effect on suicidal thought through depression. Based on these findings, the practical and policy implications were discussed.
