Abstract
High prevalence of depression has been reported in home care elders in the Western countries. But little is known about this in Korea. The study examined the level and correlates of depression in Korean elderly receiving home care services. Especially, it tried to determine the seriousness of the problem by comparing the level and factors of depression in this group with community dwelling elders who do not use home care. The data were collected from Korean elders including 184 home care users and 288 non-users. T-test, chi-square test, and multiple regression were used for analyses. Major results were as follows. First, the level of depression was much higher in home care users than in non-users. Second, greater degrees of disability and chronic diseases were significantly related to higher level of depression in both home care users and non-users. Third, the harmful effects of disability on depression in home care elders were attenuated by more service utilization and satisfaction with the services. Based on the results, implications were discussed for paying special attention to home care elders as a depression-risk group, improving assessment of depression, collaborative approaches that incorporate a wide range of nursing and psychosocial interventions into clinical care.
