Abstract
This study is aimed at examining the mediating effects of hopelessness between loneliness and suicide risk and drawing therefrom policy and practical implications for seniors who live alone. To collect data, 553 seniors who lived alone in sudeamun-gu and gangdong-gu, Seoul were surveyed on May 2010. Both multiple linear and logistic regression analysis were adopted to verify the mediating effects and the casual relationship between the variables. Through the analysis, it was found that the level of suicide risk was increased as those of loneliness and hopelessness were reduced. The results also showed that the level of hopelessness among the elderly worked as a parameter in the relationship between loneliness and suicide risk. Based on the findings, implications were drawn for gerontological practice as follows: 1) intervention for loneliness should be implemented to reduce suicide risk among seniors who live alone; 2) the scale to measure loneliness for the elderly should be developed; 3) programs that may improve the level of hope among older adults should be offered; 4) the issues of loneliness and hopelessness among elderly people who live alone should be reflected in the gerontological practice and related welfare systems; and 5) the preventive approach and the manual for elderly suicide should be developed.
