Abstract
With the rapid population aging due to declining birth rates and an increasing life expectancy, the need for care for the elderly is increasing in Korea. Meanwhile, informal care may reduce informal caregivers’ labor market participation and negatively affect economic growth. This study examines the effect of informal caregiving for the elderly on the labor market outcomes of informal caregiver.
The estimation results reveal that informal caregiving for the elderly has a negative effect on the probability of working, annual working time, and satisfaction with economic status. The effect is noticeable among those less- educated, aged 55-64 years, women, unpaid family workers, those from a higher-income household, those with a small number of household members, and those caring for the spouse’s parents.
