Abstract
This study analyzes the lived experience of COVID-19 patients in alternative care facilities from a social welfare point of view. Colaizzi’s descriptive phenomenological research method was used to analyze in-depth interviews that were conducted on 10 people who had experience in a Residential Treatment Center. The results of the interviews indicate that they were deprived of the right to self-determination when they entered the center. Moreover, the patients were psychologically distressed because they thought that they were not receiving appropriate treatment. Eventually, an optimistic outlook on their recovery helped them develop a more positive attitude towards their lives at the treatment center. Therefore, dispatching medical social workers to alternative care facilities will ensure greater psychological stability and a more stable recovery for patients. Furthermore, continuous and professional intervention made by community social workers will alleviate the after-effect that patients face after they are discharged. Therefore, expanding the role and professionalism of social workers is highly recommended during a pandemic.
