Abstract
미국의 비의사 진료인력 중 하나인 Physician Assistants(PAs)와 전문간호사(Advanced Practice Registered Nurses [APRNs])는 사회적으로 소외된 계층들의 필요와 일차진료의사 부족 현상을 해결하려는 의도에서 생겨난 오랜 역사를 가진 전문직으로서, 미국의 다양한 의료 시스템 안에서 없어서는 안 될 큰 역할을 하는 의료전문직으로 성장해 왔다. 2010년 환자 보호 및 부담 적정 보험법(The Affordable Care Act, 오바마 케어) 통과 이후 PAs와 APRNs의 필요성이 커지면서 두 전문직은 그 어느 때보다 크게 성장하고 있다. 이러한 미국의 비의사 진료인력제도를 고찰하는 것은 현재 한국이 겪고 있는 지역별 또는 진료과별 의사 수급 불균형 문제를 해결하는 데 열쇠를 제공할 것으로 사료된다.
