| dc.description.abstract | 본 연구는 코로나19의 확산한 2020년 3~12월 사이 우리나라 15~34세의 청년들이 노동시장 내에서 어떠한 경험을 하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 코로나19라는 감염병에 따른 경제위기는 청년층의 주로 종사하고 있는 숙박 및 음식점업과 교육서비스업, 여가 관련서비스업 등의 대면서비스업에 직접적인 영향을 미치면서 2020년 3~4월, 12월의 유행기마다 청년층의 고용률에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 2020년 12월경 청년층의 고용률 하락이 두드러졌는데, 이는 산업적 요인과 더불어 괜찮은 일자리의 신규 고용이 감소함에 따른 결과로 보인다. 학교를 졸업한 이후 안정적인 일자리를 찾는 남성 청년들은 이 시기에 적극적인 구직활동을 하는 대신 노동시장밖에 머물며 취업준비를 이어가는 비율이 유의미하게 높아졌다. 더불어 청년층 내에서도 성별과 전공, 졸업 후 경과기간에 따라 코로나19에 따른 영향이 달랐음을 확인하였다. |
| dc.description.abstract | This study aims to investigate the working life of the youth population during the Covid-19 pandemic. The youth labor market is known as vulnerable to economic downturns and less resilient than any other age group in previous recessions. Using a difference-in-differences framework applied to the economically active population survey microdata, this study confirmed that the youth population is more affected by the Covid-19 pandemic than other working-age groups. The employment rates of youth decreased both in the first and the third waves of the pandemic. During the first wave (March to April 2020), face-to-face service sectors, where young workers were widely employed, contributed to decreased youth employment. However, by the third wave (December 2020), the hiring freeze on regular positions led young graduates seeking decent jobs to stay out of the labor market. Among the youth population, male humanities and social science graduates who left school 2 to 4 years earlier showed the highest decrease in employment. This study also found that gender differences in reacting to this recession. During the pandemic, while the male youth stayed out of the labor market and invested in human capital such as preparing for employment and hiring exams, the female youth returned to the labor market, actively seeking jobs. This report provides implications for the youth labor market and policy based on these findings. |
