The Occurrence Process of Elder Abuse in Long-Term Care Facilities and Effective Response Strategies

Abstract

It starts with the recognition that in order to effectively prevent institutional elder abuse, it is very important to accurately determine the causes and characteristics of institutional abuse and to provide appropriate interventions. However, existing studies are limited in that they mainly focus on the actual occurrence of abuse in facilities, but they are limited to the level of ascertaining the existence or absence of facts about abuse and the perceptions of workers about abuse. Existing studies are biased toward confirming the existence of abuse facts. Because existing studies propose policies without an accurate analysis of why abuse occurs in facilities and through what channels it spreads and is prevented, their applicability in the field is diminished and it is difficult to lead to concrete actions of workers to prevent abuse. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics and types (level of abuse) of institutional abuse including inappropriate care, and to accurately diagnose the causes of abuse and the aspects (mechanism) of abuse occurring. At the same time, it is to search for effective abuse prevention (response) strategies from a legal system perspective and from the perspective of facility spontaneous efforts, based on the structural characteristics of abuse in the facility.
