Abstract

The purposes of the study were to examine the level of stigmatization of older people and to investigate the moderating effect of social networks on the relationship between social risk awareness and stigmatization of older adults. This research was carried out to compare the differences between the young and middle-aged generations. Data used for this study were from the “2017 Age Integration Survey” conducted by Ewha Institute for Age Integration Research based on the support of the Korean Social Research Foundation(SSK) from March to April 2017. A total of 658 participants’ data, including 301 young generation aged 19 to 44 and 357 middle-aged generation aged 45 to 64, was used for analysis. Results showed that, first, both young and middle-aged group showed high level of stigmatization of older adults. Second, social risk awareness in both age groups has a statistically significant effect on stigmatization of older adults. Third, the moderating effect of social networks was confirmed on the relationship between social risk awareness and stigmatization of older adults in both age groups. This study suggested that strengthening the social networks of young and middle-aged people is necessary to reduce stigmatization of older people and further discussion was provided.
