Abstract
This study examined the effect of childhood socioeconomic status on depression of middle-aged adults in the life course perspective and tried to identify the path by verifying whether the two variables are mediated by the socioeconomic status of midlife. The Korean Welfare Panel was used for the first year to the twelfth year. Data were analyzed by path analysis and multiple mediation analysis using structural equation model (SEM). The results showed that experience of drop-out of school due to financial strains among socioeconomic status directly elevated the depression level of middle-aged adults. Also, parental education level, self-perceived economic status and experience of drop-out of school due to financial strains increase the depression level of middle-aged adults by indirectly mediating through their level of income and education. These results indicate that to lower the depression level of middle-aged adults, it is important not only to intervene in the risk factors at the time but also to resolve the inequality in childhood socioeconomic status. Based on the results of this analysis, this study suggests the basis of proactive intervention as a way to improve the mental health of middle-aged adults in the life course perspective.
