Abstract

Socioeconomic deprivation and health are known to be highly related to one another, but relatively little research has been conducted on the relationship among the elderly. This study aimed to examine the effects of socioeconomic deprivation on health status in the elderly and to verify the mediating effects of depression on the relationship socioeconomic deprivation and health status. The Study utilized data on 4,994 elderly people aged 65 years or older, using the 11th Korea Welfare Panel Study (2016). In order to test the mediating effect, multiple regression analysis was conducted following the procedures suggested by Baron & Kenny (1986), and Sobel test was conducted to test the significance of the mediating effect. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and health status in the elderly. Second, it was found that the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and health status was significantly mediated by depression. Based on these results, this study discussed further suggestions to improve the health status in the elderly people by relieving socioeconomic deprivation and depression.
