Influences of Individual and Couple Characteristics on Childbearing Plans and Births

Abstract

본 연구는 한국여성가족패널 자료를 활용하여 출산 계획과 출산 행위에 있어서 개인 특성과 부부 특성의 영향을 분석하였다. 기존 연구들에 비해 개인 특성과 부부 특성을 아우른 다양한 변수들을 검토하였지만, 출산 계획 및 행위와 유의하게 연관된 변수들은 상당히 제한적임을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 분석 결과는 개인 특성과는 별도로 부부 특성 또한 출산 계획과 행위를 설명하는 데 있어서 일정한 역할을 하고 있음을 보여 주고 있다. 개인 특성 중 출산계획 혹은 행위와 유의하게 연관되는 변수들은 대체로 연령이나 출산 연령과 같은 인구학적 변수들에 국한되는 패턴을 보였다. 부부 특성의 경우 분석 모형에 따라 배우자 간 연령이나 교육수준 격차, 아내 대비 남편의 상대적 가사노동 시간의 효과가 유의하게 나타남을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 본 연구는 또한 출산 행위 분석에서 출산 계획의 효과를 추가적으로 검토하였는데, 분석결과는 둘째 및 셋째 출산 행위 모두에서 출산 계획은 출산 행위와 유의하게 연관됨을 보여 주었다. 마지막으로, 분석 결과를 기초로 저출산 문제 완화 측면에서 본 연구가 지닌 함의를 논의하였다.

Using panel data from the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (KLoWF), this study investigates the effects of individual and couple characteristics on childbearing plans and births in the republic of Korea. Despite the wide range of variables examined, the results indicate that overall only limited variables are found to have significant effects on birth plans and behavior. However, this study also finds that, compared to individual characteristics, couple characteristics (such as educational gap between spouses and husbands’ participation in domestic labor relative to their wives’) have unique contributions in explaining birth plans and behavior. This study also finds that birth plans play a valuable role in explaining actual fertility behavior. Finally, this study discusses the results in the context of the effectiveness of pro-natal population policies in the republic of Korea.
