Abstract
This study is a qualitative case study on the coping experiences of cancer survivors in their middle years. In-depth interviews were conducted face to face with six participants aged 56 to 67. These participants were living in Seoul and Gyonggi area, and all were diagnosed of cancer and survived it in their middle age. By using Creswell’s (2007) qualitative case study method, a total of eight themes were found: 1) my body as a principal agent and an object of healing; 2) resignation of one’s desire as great renunciation; 3) sorrows of leaving children behind; 4) resetting the past relationship with people and society; 5) searching for a fault inside oneself; 6) emasculating the impact of cancer by immersing oneself in something else; 7) reverence for nature and life; and 8) being triumphant toward illness. Based on these findings, the author discussed the restoration of sovereignty on one’s body, a strategy to emasculate cancer, self-awareness amidst human relationship, and veneration for the healing power of nature. Suggestions to improve care services for the middle-aged cancer patients and the limitations of this study were also discussed.
