Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to measure social stigma toward suicidal people. Suicide stigma is an important issue for suicide prevention, but there has been a lack of systematic efforts to measure the stigmatic social perceptions about suicide. This study attempted to develop a suicide stigma scale reflecting the culture and values of Korean society. After compiling exploratory items based on the literature review and an in-depth survey, we first extracted distinctive factors with a survey of 164 adults. Then, based on another survey of 510 adults, we conducted an exploratory factor analysis. The result yielded 7-factors with 46 items :‘Incompetence,’ ‘Personality,’ ‘Immorality,’ ‘Selfishness,’ ‘Glorification,’ ‘Sympathy,’ and ‘Social Exclusion.’ The subscales of each dimension showed statistically significant internal reliabilities. The convergent validity was also confirmed by its significant relationships with the Scale of Public Attitudes about Suicide, Stigma of Suicide Scale, and Stigma of Suicide Attempt. The scale developed in this study can be used to systematically measure suicide stigma in Korean society. Furthermore, a better understanding of suicide stigma reflecting the Korean culture will help us develop effective message strategies to reduce stigma in Korean society.
