Abstract
Elderly suicide has become a serious social problem in Korea. This study examined the relationship between subjective socioeconomic status and suicidal ideation in older Koreans. Under this relationship, we investigated the double-mediating effects of stress and self-rated health. The sample, drawn from the Korea Health Panel (KHP) 2012, consisted of a total of 1916 older adults who responsed to our questions concerning subjective socioeconomic status, stress, self-rated health level and suicidal ideation. We used a macro for SPSS for analysis of double-mediating effects. Our analysis showed that higher stress level and lower subjective health levels increased the likelihood of suicidal ideation. Subjective socioeconomic status affected suicidal ideation through the double-mediating path of stress and subjective health. However, it did not show a direct effect on suicidal ideation. This study suggests that economic support and stress-coping programs should be provided to reduce suicide in the elderly.
