Abstract
In this study, we analyzed the relationship between older Koreans’ depression and their poverty in the dimensions of income, housing and health, using the Korea Welfare Panel Survey (2005~2013). We found that elderly Koreans were exposed most to income poverty, followed in order by health poverty and housing poverty. One in four elderly Koreans reported having depression. The prevalence of self-reported depression was higher for those in poverty. In 2013, 34.6% of income-poor elderly Koreans reported having depression, 44.8% of those in health poverty said they had depression, and 47.5% of the elderly housing-poor said they had the condition. Of the surveyed, 42.7 percent were in long-term income poverty, while poverty in the dimensions of housing and health was temporary. The prevalence of both poverty and self-reported depression was higher in women, those living alone, and those with low education levels, and those living in rural areas. Our regression analysis found a statistically significant positive relationship between self-reported depression and poverty in elderly Koreans. Also among the findings was that the longer an elderly individual has depressive symptoms the more likely she or he is to experience income poverty, housing poverty and health poverty. Social support for elderly Koreans will have to be planned taking into account the different dimensions of their poverty and the special characteristics of their depression.
