Abstract
This study takes note of the physical environmental aspect that has been overlooked relatively in comparison with the psycho-social environment all this while, especially in the mental health field. Accordingly, this study looked into what influence of the change in the architectural environment of the center space has on space awareness and life in general of users, such as members and employees, through the case study of two community mental health centers (CMHC) which were designed on the basis of the concept of healing environment which supports humans’ healthy lives. For this purpose, this study collected data on the architectural environment of the CMHC which became the object for case analysis, and conducted the focus group interview of the users as well as analyzed the contents thereof qualitatively; as a result, this study could confirm that the intention of architectural design to create a healing environment was being realized through actual users’ space awareness and change of life. In other words, the research result showed that the stress factors which occurred from the existing physical environment have been improved, and even emotionally, there was a change such as enhancement of healthy interaction between users while feeling more comfortable and stable than ever before. In addition, the environment change of such a center showed the possibility of making a contribution to social integration of people with mental illness bringing improvement of images the centers and their users, as well as self-awareness. Based on such a research result, this study suggested a practical direction for creating architectural environments in the mental health field including CMHC.
