Abstract
Due to the exam-driven education system in Korea, adolescents show lower level of career decision making while their educational achievement is relatively higher than their counterparts in other countries. Higher career decision level is a key determinant of future well-being because it is associated with well-paying jobs and higher job-satisfaction. However, research in this area is quite limited and fragmented. This study examined the mediation effects of career-barriers which link the influence of self-esteem and social support to the level of career decision making among adolescents in low-income families. Data was gathered from 827 teenagers enrolled in programs in 28 self-sufficiency promotion agencies in Korea. Results show that self-esteem and social support are negatively associated with a level of career barrier, and a level of career barrier is inversely correlated with a career decision level. Also, career-barrier is found to be a perfect mediator between social support and the level of career decision making. To enhance the level of career decision making of low income adolescents, authors suggest solutions for policy and practice which can minimize career barriers.
