Child poverty has emerged as one of the most serious social problems in the era of economic affluency. In order to prevent child poverty, we need to understand its size, produce national statistics, and find correlates and/or factors in relations with child poverty.
The primary objective of this study is to estimate the both absolute and relative child poverty rates in Korea and find factors affecting it using the National Social Life Survey in 2004. We found that the absolute child poverty rate and the relative child poverty rate amounted to 8.9% and 14.9%, respectively, and the number of children living below the absolute poverty line and the relative poverty line are approximately 1.02 million and 1.7 million, respectively.
This study classified 1,538 households into three categories according to the two poverty lines, such as extreme poverty, second level poverty, and no poverty. We found that region, age, education, occupation and the disability of parents were significant factors influencing child poverty.
In conclusion, children living with grandparent(s), single fathers with poor education and under-employment, rural residents, and dual-earner families with low education and part-time employment were most likely to fall into extreme poverty; and single mothers with poor education and part-time employment were most likely to fall to second level poverty.
