한국 언론의 정신건강 보도에 관한 내용 분석 연구: 뉴스 프레임과 기사 논조를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 정신건강 관련 내용들이 뉴스에서 어떤 프레임과 논조로 보도되고 있는지를 살펴보고, 향후 정신건강 관련 언론보도의 바람직한 방향을 모색하는 데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 연구를 위해 최근 2년간 13개의 일간지에 보도된 정신건강 관련 기사를 토대로 내용 분석을 실시하였으며 그 결과, 정신건강 관련 검색어들 중 특히 자살 및 우울증 관련 기사의 빈도가 높았음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 부정적인 논조의 기사가 많았으며, 뉴스 프레임의 경우 인간적 흥미 프레임과 갈등 프레임, 사회적 프레임의 순으로 빈도가 많이 나타났다. 같은 정신건강 관련 이슈라 하더라도 필자 유형이나 기사 유형, 기사 내 성별과 연령 등에 따라 부정적 논조가 다르게 나타났다. 이러한 현상은 뉴스 프레임의 경우도 동일하게 나타났다. 어떤 뉴스 프레임이냐에 따라 기사 논조에서도 차이가 있었는데, 뉴스 프레임 중 부정적 논조가 많이 나타나는 프레임은 위기 프레임과 갈등 프레임, 사회적 프레임이었고, 예방 프레임의 경우 긍정적 논조의 기사가 많은 것으로 분석됐다. 본 연구는 정신건강 언론 보도를 우울증, 자살 등의 영역으로 나누어 내용 분석에 집중하였던 기존의 연구를 개괄적인 정신건강 영역으로 확대하여 분석해 보았다는 점에 의의가 있다. 정신건강에 대한 사회적 관심과 정책적 노력이 증가하고 있는 상황에서 본 연구가 언론이 정신건강에 대한 정확한 정보를 전달하고, 이슈를 기사화하는데 있어 바람직한 보도방향을 정립하는데 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.

The purpose of the present study is to analyze news frame and tone of articles on mental heath with a view to prividing a desirable direction for news coverage related to mental health in future. For this purpose, we conducted a content analysis based on mental health articles reported on in 13 major daily newspapers over the past two years. As a result, we found that the frequencies of mentioning ‘suicide-’ and ‘depression-’ related words were higher than others. In addition, there were many articles of a negative tone, and in terms of news frame, human interest frame, conflict frame, and social frame were more frequently observed than others in order. Even with the same mental health issue, negative tones are different depending on the types of authors and articles, etc. Finally, a crisis frame, a conflict frame, and a social frame were more strongly associated with negative tones, while a preventive frame was more strongly associated with positive tones. In the face of increasing social interest and policy efforts in mental health, it is expected that the present study provide people with accurate information on mental health, and to help to prepare a desirable media guideline.
