사회통합의 또 다른 시각: 이주민이 인식한 한국 사회의 수용성

Abstract

한국 사회는 체류 외국인의 증가로 더 이상 단일민족이나 한핏줄 사회가 아닌 다문화 사회가 되었다. 역사적으로 한국은 다양한 외국인이 거주하는 사회이거나 이민국가가 아니었기 때문에 이주민이 증가하면서 나타나는 현상을 다양하게 경험하며 이주민이 사회 구성원으로 정당한 대우를 받고 권리를 보장받을 수 있는 사회로 나아가고 있다. 이러한 변화를 관찰하기 위해 한국 사회의 이주민에 대한 수용 정도를 파악하는 것은 매우 중요하다.

이 연구는 한국 사회의 이주민에 대한 수용성을 파악하기 위해 이주민의 시각에서 한국 사회가 어느 정도 수용적이라고 인식하는지 알아본다. 이를 위해 한국인을 대상으로 파악했던 수용성 관련 내용을 활용하여 한국에 체류 중인 이주민을 대상으로 한국 사회·한국인이 어떠하다고 느끼고 인식하는지 알아본다. 또한 한국인의 생각과 이에 대한 이주민의 인식을 비교함으로써 한국인의 시각에 의존해 왔던 기존과는 다른 시각에서 한국 사회의 수용성을 파악한다. 이 결과를 바탕으로 발전된 통합사회를 위해 한국 사회가 나가야 할 방향에 대해 논의한다.

This study explores migrants’ perceptions of Korea. It investigates the differences between groups by the characteristics of migrants such as region of origin and types of visas. It also finds the difference between the thoughts of Koreans and the perceptions of migrants. Based on the results, policy implications are proposed. The experiences and perceptions of migrants have differences among various subgroups. In particular, the region of origin and visa type of migrants are important variables that bring differences between groups in migrants’ perceptions of Korea and their lives in Korea. This study finds that the Korean language level is important in living in Korea and migrants’ perception of Korea changes when the period of stay in Korea is more than 5 years. In addition, this study shows that the experience of discrimination in Korea is an important variable that makes a difference in migrants’ perceptions of life satisfaction or acceptability in Korea. Migrants’ perception of inclusivity to migrants in Korea tends to be better than Korean’s thoughts. Koreans are at the level of accepting various cultures and migrants to some extent. However, Koreans are very wary of migrants becoming leaders or negatively affecting Korean society. Based on these results, multicultural policy in Korea should come up with a way for migrants and Koreans to truly understand each other in real life. The study emphasizes, on the one hand, anti-bias and anti-discrimination education aimed at Koreans is essential. On the other hand, social environment where migrants can learn the rules and customs necessary for living in Korea from the beginning of their arrival is needed. Furthermore, the current study suggests the monitoring system for the media or the internet should work to prevent distorted perceptions of migrants.
