dc.description.abstract	독립적 정신건강옹호 서비스(IMHA: Independent Mental Health Advocacy)는 정신건강법에 따라 서비스 대상이 되는 사람들의 권리를 보호하고 증진하는 방식으로 부상하고 있다. 정신건강법은 개인의 자율성에 제한을 두기에 그 존재 자체가 논란의 대상이 된다. 이러한 맥락에서 권리 보호를 위한 독립적 정신건강옹호 서비스 도입은 유엔장애인권리협약(UNCRPD: the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities)에 따른 의사결정 지원을 실현하기 위한 것이라는 의미를 가질 수 있다. 서비스 이용자의 변화 및 당사자 중심의 행동주의에 뿌리를 두고 있는 정신건강옹호 개념을 법률에 반영하는 것은 비교적 새로운 현상이다. 이 글은 독립적 정신건강옹호 서비스의 성과와 한계, 향후 발전을 위한 함의를 살펴보기 위해 독립적 정신건강옹호 서비스의 발전 과정과 지금까지의 경험을 고찰한다.
