The purpose of this study is to analyze the success rate and key factors in smoking cessation that resulted by the trial smoking cessation clinic program held in 2004. Addition to that, by analysing the cost of the program, it aims to raise the rate of those who give up smoking and to provide basic information in order to promote the efficiency of the program. Object of this study was 716 people who were provided with smoking cessation services for 6 months by registering to 10 trial public health centers from October 2004 to December 2004. The data were analysed by SPSS(version 11.0.1 windows). Chi-square analysis and t-test were conducted to see the statistical significance between each independent variable and the success in smoking cessation. Also, to find out the factors that affect the success of smoking cessation, logistic regression was done. As the result of the analysis, it showed that 61.3% of the participants were able to quit smoking for 4 weeks and 38.4% for 6 months. Logistic regression showed that age, occupation, social security, average number of cigarettes per day, and alcoholic problem were the factors that affect the successful smoking cessation for 4 weeks. And for those who were able to quit for 6 months, the factors were age, occupation, number of cigarettes per day, alcoholic problem, and frequency of counselling. The factors to have influence on the successful smoking cessation are not different at 4 weeks and 6 months. The study showed that behavioral interventions and pharmacologic interventions can raise the success rate of smoking cessation. Also, by defining the factors that affect smoking cessation, it is estimated to raise the success rate of smoking cessation for smoking cessation clinic program in the future.
