| dc.description.abstract | Despite the public’s growing interest and demand in the oriental medicine with its expansion of range of use, the public’s confidence in the quality of herbal medicine decreased with constantly raised safety issues associated with it. The goal of this study is to reduce the public’s distrust through the risk assessment road map of hazardous substances in herbal medicines. To achieve this goal, the following needs to be addressed: First, assesment of current domestic and foreign status of the herbal medicine management, second, analysis of domestic and foreign herbal medicine safety research status, third, domestic and foreign incidents and issues analysis, forth, deriving promoted strategies and tasks for risk assessment by creating a risk profile, which lists the priority hazardous substances for management. These substances were selected based the expert’s evaluation. The tasks were derived from the four promoted strategies: Hazardous substance toxicity studies empowerment, pollution level reduction of hazardous substances, minimizing human exposure to hazardous substances, and finally strengthening competence of hazardous materials analysis techniques. The study subject of the tasks are limited to priority hazardous substances of herbal medicines, which consist of unintentional contaminants such as, heavy metals, pesticides, and mycotoxin, as well as the intentional contaminants, introduced during manufacturing processes, including benzopyrene, and sulfur dioxide. The first task is to monitor the hazardous substances in frequently consumed herbal medicines to reduce the contamination level. It is important to monitor the cultivation stage, while considering the variations in regional and medicinal using part variations, manufacturing and processing stage, and distribution stage. The second task is to perform human exposure and risk evaluation for each hazardous substance in the order to minimize the human exposure. To execute this task, a study on consumption of herbal medicine is needed for human exposure assessment and risk based prioritization of frequently consumed herbal medicine for contaminants is also necessary. In addition, a research to create or adopt the latest analysis technology adoption for new hazardous materials is essential to be more competent in hazardous substance analysis. These long-term, medium-term and short-term tasks were promoted according to the characteristics, current monitoring status, and importance priority of the hazardous substance based on the results of the researches conducted by the experts’ focus group. |
