This study was carried out with following purposes: 1) Evaluating classification system of food business, which is divided by 8 major categories and 23 sub-categories in accordance with the Chapter 21st of Food Sanitation Law, in Korea; 2) Identifying current status of food business; 3) Deriving improvement plans and amendments to the current law by improvement. Enacted in 1962, Food Sanitation Law began to manage food business which was subdivided in to a total of 35. Since then, enactment and amendment of related law has been made 35 times. Food business was subdivided into 49 categories in amendment of 1982, and the current classification system was completed by amendment of 2005. Considering that enactment and amendment of law is driven to take action to chronological change, there are recent changes in food business classification in Korea, including growth of e-commerce, growing market of food appliance, and increasing lawlessness operation in Food service business. Since consumer damage cases are increasing, scrutiny and improvement on food business classification are needed. To derive improvement plans, analysis of market growth in each business, analysis of current management status of overseas, inquiry of consumer damage cases, investigation of perception on food safety from consumers and businesses, invitation to associations' opinions, structure and operations of advisory committee, and expert review on amendments to the law were performed. To secure food safety from e-commerce and others, detailed plans, which are establishment Food sales brokerage from Food subdivision sales and Food appliance manufacturing from Container · package manufacturing, and amendments of related law are suggested. In particular, attorney opinion on classification of Food sales brokerage was presented. Lastly, for the Food service business, only broad improvements were stated by in-depth research plan of next year.
